future

April 19, 2007

Last week I took the opportunity to visit one of my wife’s IU classes (The History of Christianity from 1500-Today.)  This is a class that I actually took during my time as an undergrad at IU. The topic of discussion for the day was Dostoevsky’s Grand Inquisitor – (if you haven’t read it you need to add it to your list.)  After almost two years outside of an IU classroom I had almost completely forgotten how exciting it is to share thoughts, opinions and questions within the context of a classroom discussion.

That being said, I am contemplating grad school again for the first time in a long time. However this train of thought is long and complex. When to make the transition, where to enroll, and most importantly which area of study. Journalism is a real option, but I’m so unfamiliar with this area of scholarship that I feel I need to do more research before I move forward in the decision making process. At a strictly theoretical level though, it feels like a good fit.

My gut tells me that Journalism will equip me with the ability to communicate my thoughts and opinions in a manner that is effecient. I’d love to be able to say in 250 words what often takes me 750. I feel that the discipline of print Journalism mandates brevity. So that’s that. I have no idea what the future holds for my education or employment, but the future will come soon and my prayer is that I will be ready for it!
